Electronic Cigarettes in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh adults are making the switch to electronic cigarettes as an alternative to traditional smoking or chewing tobacco. Electronic cigarettes allow the sensation of smoking without the actual smoke. They use a liquid – sometimes referred to as e-juice – made up of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavoring, and varying levels of nicotine.
Propylene glycol is a solvent used in various food, cosmetics, and even some medication. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that propylene glycol is generally recognized as safe. Vegetable glycerin is a plant-based oil that can also be found in food and cosmetics. Most juices contain a ratio of 70 VG / 30 PG or 80 VG / 20 PG. Vegetable glycerin is slightly more viscous than propelyne glycol, so a higher VG ratio will produce a thicker juice. Further information about propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin in regards to vaping can be found by clicking here.
Traditional e-juices contain 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, or 12mg of nicotine. A regular smoker may opt for a higher level such as 6mg or 12mg. Various nicotine concentration levels allow the user to work their way up or down if they are looking to curb their habit. Nicotine can also be purchased separately if the user desires a non-traditional amount in their juice.
How’s it work?
An electronic cigarette works using a battery, an atomizer, and a tank. The battery, sometimes called a “mod”, can be either internal or external and determines the amount of power the e-cig contains. Mods may function using one, two, or even three batteries depending on the device. A more powerful battery can result in higher amounts of vapor, therefore a larger hit. The atomizer contains a coil which is the heating element of the device. The coil is wrapped with cotton, which then absorbs the liquid to be vaporized. A dry hit may occur if the cotton is not thoroughly saturated with juice. The user can prevent dry hits by priming a new coil (directly saturating the cotton) and by waiting a few moments between hits. Maintaining a high juice level will also prevent dry hits. The vapor flavor may begin to taste burnt after some time in which it is then time to replace the atomizer.
